THROWBACK THURSDAYS 14

I've decided to post a few sketches this week from my sketchbook. I'm currently working on a painting inspired by the characters from Disney's Song of the South movie. These are some of my wacky sketch studies I did while watching the movie. I don't care too much for the live action scenes in the movie, but the animated stories within are in my opinion some of the best display of Disney animation EVER. I know it's a bold statement but you'd have to know a thing or two about the animation process and techniques in order to appreciate this masterfull piece of animation. Especially for the time period for which it was released in 1973. The voices for the characters were AMAZING! Lipsyncing the fast talking fox had to be a nightmare in itself. I may post some photos later on my painting development. In the meantime, here are some screen captures from the Song of the South movie posted over at songofthesouth.net Swing by to learn more about the movie.

Also here are some really cool Giant golden books of Disney's Song of the South stories. Covers done by Mary Blair.

Here is a VERY cool new DVD from Universal of The Adventures of Brer Rabbit all new animation done very well. I bought it ASAP and was very pleased. Click on the link for the movie's website and DVD trailer.
There is a really cool review and back history of the story and movie release here..EURweb

Sharing some designs

I'm posting a few character designs I did for Nickelodeon a little over a year ago. I was told that the show unfortunately isn't going to happen, so I hope its okay to share them with you all. It was a blast to do and a good exercise in pushing one of my many styles. I did tons of artwork for this project, but It would take me forever to post them all. These are the ones that grabbed real quickly. I hope you dig 'em.

THROWBACK THURSDAYS 13

Mighty, mighty, MIGHTY MAN! and his dog YUKK was a cartoon aired in 1979 on ABC during the Plastic Man hour. I had to dig deep in my animated mental archive for this one. Not many remember this show, but it was one that had me glued to the screen when I was a kid. This show was produce by Ruby-Spears Productions The concept went like this...Mighty Man was really millionaire Brandon Brewster, but when he hit himself with his--umm--Mighty Man Ray, he'd shrink to less than a foot tall and gain super-strength and the ability to fly. Yukk was Mighty Man's dog. He walked around on his back legs and wore a little doghouse over his head because he was the ugliest dog in the world. Anytime he took off his doghouse, sirens and screams would be heard, and anyone within eyeshot would be severely traumatized by the experience. He was so ugly, he could even destroy inanimate objects. That's really damn ugly!
What a great cartoon concept. The voice of Yukk was classic as well. I wish I could get this great cartoon along with the rest of the Plastic Man line up on DVD somehow. My search is on. In the meantime, I'll just add this throwback with the rest of my fav's into my classic cartoon limbo.
