NOTHING WRONG WITH A LITTLE CHANGE

As many of you have noticed, I haven't been posting much lately . All due to taking on tons of freelance work. GOOD NEWS is, most of that work is off of my plate now and that I am planning on starting anew. I'm changing the look of the blog (this is only a temporary template for now). I promise to have tons of new art to share as well as the occasional Throwback. Just keep checking back for updates or sign up for a feed update. A lot of my projects throughout next year will be animated, so updates wont be as frequent as it is for sketches. So please bare with me during this positive transition into 2009. It's time for a CHANGE. My joyful congratulations go out to our new president and his wonderful family. I'm fired up and ready to go for the next few years.

9/25 Sketches

I really want to start sketching more often. Mostly without too much thought. I started off my usual way by making random shapes with a brush marker, then turning each shape into a character. Below is a character collage from an older sketchbook.

SAX Jr ROCKS GH3 "DragonFOREST"

Lil' Sax wanted to try out Guitar Hero, so I had him try out the hardest song on the game to see what he would do. I captured his performance and speed it up for fun. All his moves were made up on his own from his tiny little head.

THROWBACK THURSDAY "I got no strings"

I have a new addiction called Guitar hero. I've tried to play real guitar and thought it was really difficult to maneuver my fingers on the strings. When my niece stayed over for the summer, she brought this game over and I was hooked. It became an all out battle between she and I on the Wii for top score. When I began to get the true hang of it, I began to crush her in points (I'm really competitive) I started talking trash and for some reason I yelled out "I GOT NO STRINGS TO HOLD ME DOWN!" Later on I realized that this was a song from Pinocchio, so I quickly did a rough sketch which ultimately turned into today's Throwback Thursday.

This song is pretty fun to play....

(Not me btw)

OH! I forgot to drop this little bit of animated knowledge on ya about the Guitar Hero 3 game. There is some really cool 2D animation throughout the career mode of the game done by a great animation studio out west called Titmouse. The head of this outfit is a great animator I've had the pleasure of chatting with off and on by the name of Chris Prynoski. You might be familiar with his work if you've seen things like MTV Downtown, the opening credits of Afro Samurai, The opening animation of Avatar on Nick and Adult Swim's Metalocalypse. He's bean around in the animation biz for a while and I love his work. Peep the clip below....

This is why I like Bakshi

I've always loved the work of Ralph Bakshi. I came across this video of him at SD comic con over on Cartoon Brew. It's a MUST SEE. Bakshi tells it like it is, blunt and to the point. Make your own film.
Go out and get this book while your at it.

Kid stuff

This is an unused kid I designed recently for a new project of mine. He's got the moppy haired Marty McFly look going on. I think I'll store him away for another project.

ERNey from my sketchbook

Here's a collage/ painting from my sketchbook of Earnie. I really enjoy drawing Bert and Earnie in different styles and situations. This one is in my blocky style with a little abstract twist.

STRAWBERRY THROWBACK

Here's the way I visualize Strawberry Shortcake. Kinda like a rag doll with straw like legs. I also added this massive berry in her hat which covers her big curly yarn hair. She's still cute, but fun. These 2 images were my concept for the new strawberry makeover look which didn't get used, but I still think they're cool.

Here's the classic clip...

HEAVY ROTATION

As I'm working on a few new sketches and other personal projects, I've been listening to this English band called "The Go! Team". Their music is fun and full of energy. My kids love to dance to them as well. I recently saw a clip of their newest single on Cartoon Network as an interstitial. Very cool pixel style animation similar to the White Stripes lego video. Anyhow, I tracked down the full video and thought I'd share it with you all.

Seems that most of their videos involve animation, here's another.

GO! SPEED GO!

GO! SPEED GO!, originally uploaded by saxtonmoore.

I've been horrible at posting as of late. Especially with the Throwbacks (forgive me) Hopefully this will get me up to SPEED. LOL. I had this sitting around in my sketchbook all week, so I just gave it some color for the post. Speed racer the movie got slept on in the theaters this summer, but after seeing it for myself I thought it was worth every penny. Good movie, check it out when it hits DVD.

My color inspiration, the classic speed pose in front of the Mach 5.

OLD SCHOOL CLASSIC SPEED.

NEW SCHOOL SPEED ON SPEED.

The directors did a good job (in my opinion) on keeping the tone of the cartoon. The actors did a great job as well. A lot of people are quick to judge without actually seeing the movie for themselves.

Gain The World Music video

Find more videos like this on Channel Frederator RAW

This is an animated music video for the band Morcheeba, directed and designed by the talented mastermind Joel Trussell and animation collaboration with your's truly (SACKS10) I felt like sharing it here mostly because the youtube version that was posted on the web was a horrible representation. The animation was limited purposely to lend to the director's stylization. I hope you dig it as much as I do. Feel free to comment below.

Strawberry Shortcake card design

I did this graphic approach to the Strawberry Shortcake character for a Licensing show greeting card. The original design was much more cartoony, but I went with more of a sophisticated look for a change. I really don't do a lot of graphic illustrations, but this worked. A bunch of other talented artists did their take on other characters like Madballs and Sushi Pack for greeting cards as well. I will add links to their art whenever they upload them to the web.

This month (actually last month) I've been reading the bio on Walt Disney. AMAZING book. I strongly recommend this read. I also stumbled upon this rare gem called "The adventures of Isabel". I usually check out books to read to my kids from the library and I lucked up on this find. I really enjoy kids storybooks. This one had a really cool old school limited color palette. The story was pretty strange too. The little Isabel nibbled on a one eyed giant who was going to grind her bones into bread. Afterwards she beheaded him with a pair of scissors (no lie)

I GOT JUICE !

These 2 images have been floating on my computer for quite sometime unfinished. I actually made an effort to finish them up finally. These characters stemmed from my first college sketchbook years ago and eventually turned into cool concept of mine. The pink bunny (BETA) is our hero who fights off these red hooded trouble making CREEPS who like to multiply and trash everything.

Tek1 Robot/ SUSHI PACK GAME!!!!

This is a robot illustration from one of my properties that I'm using for Channel Frederator's awards booklet. The theme was "Robots in metropolis"

If you like Sushi and enjoy playing games online, you should definitely click over and play The NEW SUSHI PACK "Beat the Heat" game. I illustrated all of the character art for the talented Mr. Brian Emling who concept and put the game together. I don't play many games online, but this one is loads of addictive gaming fun. Click on the "Beat the Heat" banner to the right and check it out. Lemme know what you think. Let the kiddies play and explore the Sushi Pack webpage.

I also did this illustration and logo above as well.

SPACEMEN & PUSSYCATS

I draw these blocky headed characters from time to time and friends seem to like them. So I'm thinking of doing a series of paintings with them. As a theme I somehow thought that they would look cool with Spacesuits. Then I saw my cat curled up sleeping on my bench and thought how peaceful she was and how I would love to take her on a space exploration. So now I'm going to include pussycats with fur painted to represent each planet's colors in our solar system. This is my first page of many conceptual sketches to choose each painting. Feel free to lemme know which ones you like the most as I post to help me choose which ones I'm going to paint.

More sketches.

Beaten Heart

Here's a character I designed over the weekend for a scene in my little short film I'm chugging away at in the wee hours. His hobbies include collecting left hooks and right crosses to the face.

This guy is a double stack of FEAR who gives Beaten Heart the latest updates on what's new in the world of Knuckle Samitches. To the right is his insperation, KIMBO SLICE!!!!!!

My Mojo Jojo interview animation.

I was really excited to see this posted on YouTube. I did this animation of Mojo Jojo for the Powerpuff girls movie DVD as a special feature. I never got a solid copy of the final thing, so I was happy to see this posted. I also did the animated interview of the mayor as well.

The Extra guy at the end of this one was animated by the talented Mr. Jeff Fastner over at Primal Screen.

Just had to post.

Found this pic in a 50's ad book. I have no clue where it came from. Jellystone park maybe? Looked really cool so I just had to share it witcha. If you have a clue where this was taken, post a comment to let me know.

Someone in the comments section asked why there weren't any African Americans in the Flintstones world. Within my mental log of cartoon imagery I distinctly remember seeing something of this nature, then I had to track it down to share with you all. I present to you the "BLACKSTONES" (and I thought the first photo was bizarre)

Daft Punk Fan Video

I've been jamming to a lot of Daft Punk to keep me awake in the wee hours of the night as I work on freelance gigs. I came across this which I thought was really clever, not to mention difficult. At first it seems dumb and boring, but watch it as the video progresses.

Daft also have an animated movie in anime style based off of their music. No dialogue whatsoever. Worth checking out. FUNKY.

BATMAN GOTHAM KNIGHT

Much similar to the Animatrix, DC has taken the anime approach to a series of Batman short films coming out direct to DVD summer 2008. Bruce Timm is involved as directer as well as anime studios such as Studio 4c (Tekon Kinkreet), Madhouse, and Production IG (Ghost in the shell). Even though I'm a big Marvel fan, I am anxiously looking forward to seeing this film. I hope you enjoy this sneak peek I found on youtube.

48 frames of YO! LOVE

Find more videos like this on Channel Frederator RAW

Here's the short piece of animation I did for the 48 frames of love contest. It features my main character Yin that I created years ago when I started to get into yo yo-ing and our cat Lilly. Lilly the Cat falls in love as Yin woo's her with his heartwarming yo yo trick for valentines day.

Oh, and if you've ever wondered how Yo Yo's are made, check out this cool clip I found of the YoYo factory in Arizona. Edited to the tune of the Chemical Brothers (I love this song)

...And yes, the YoYo really does float.

IRONMAN ADVENTURES

Being a big Ironman fan, I was ecstatic when I came across these clips on the new Marvelkids.com. In my opinion, this is what all marvel direct to dvd movies should be like. There are 3 clips in the trilogy. Each one introduces a surprise guest appearance. The only other way I can see doing a direct to dvd marvel movie in 2D would be by letting one of the marvel vets like Jack Kirby,John Romita (Sr/Jr) or Tim Sale stylize the whole movie. Aw, I can dream cant I?

I'M ON CHANNEL FREDERATOR!

LOOK Ma, I'm on channel frederator. My 4 second winter themed animation made it on the current episode on Channel Frederator. Check it out and leave some comments!.Subscribe while your there. Spread the Fred.

A brief summery:
I don't know about everyone else out there, but I hate going out in that cold, snowy weather. To see those die hard smokers out there braving the cold on a dedicated smoke break always gives me a good laugh. This one's for all you smokers out there taking your winter drags, I see you. Be Cool, but don't catch cold.
