THROWBACK THURSDAY 29

Captain Kangaroo was one of my favorite live action saturday morning shows. Though it's not my usual cartoon related post for Thursday, It quite definetly is a throwback to my saturday morning childhood memories. Before any of the cartoon blocks or lineups came on, this show set the pace for that morning. It's animated intro style was like a mix of Peter Max and school house rock. The captain himself wore this pimpish bright red blazer with white trim on it and he had the sickest sideburns I had ever seen. lol. I recently learned that he and Mister Rogers were buddies and both war heroes. A lot of really cool segments appeared on the show like Bill cosby's Picture pages, Mr Slim Goodbody and Simon in the land of chalk. I wish there were more shows like this airing today for the younger generation to enjoy.

I've got to track down this book.

Gotta love all the British animation that was coming out around the same time as Simon in the Land of Chalk drawings. So charming and peaceful. Have a look about for Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine and Noggin the Nog; some other brilliant series' with a similar tone.

Wow, what a blast from the past. Great interpretation of the Captain.

Somewhere at my parents house hides that very book. I came across it on a visit a few years back, and should have liberated it then. It's now in a box somewhere.

Good morning, Captain!

"Captain Kangaroo" aired on CBS during the 1960s and 1970s for one hour weekday mornings before CBS turned the time period over to their morning news broadcasts. The Captain's show was cut to a half hour in the 1980s on Saturday Mornings until its final season in 1985. Don't forget Mr. Greenjeans, Dancing Bear, Mr. Rabbit and various famous guest star actors.

Other regular animated shorts during the Captain's program include Terrytoons' "Tom Terrific" and Sutherland Associates' "The Most Important Person" (with Fumble the ostrich, Hairy the troll, and cranky Bird the bird).

Great memories!

BTW, the "Pals" in the record album cover referred to a brand of children's chewable vitamins (like "Flintstones" vitamins) that are shaped like animals (squirrel, cat, turtle, owl, fish).

haha, nice!

I am doing something slightly tangentially related -- posting screenshots of old cartoons that are so bad I wont even watch them!

Sorry if you consider this $pam, but I consider it tangentially related!

I've only posted 2 so far, but I have 6 all drafted up ready for release. I'm going to trickle them out every few days.

Love old cartoon/tv related stuff! Thanks!
