RETURN of the THROWBACK THURSDAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know it's been a while since the last throwback, but now I'm back on it. I'm also typing up another interview that will fallow up with another THROWBACK THURSDAYS CONTEST for the month of October. (stay posted) This throwback stuck in my mind as a kid. It was a great concept with a poor cheesy delivery. (as were many 80's cartoons) Turbo teen aired in 1984 with only 12 episodes, but I just couldn't get it out of my head. I was super excited when I saw the saturday morning promos on TV.
Please post comments if any of you remember this show, so I won't feel alone on this one.

Show Summary: Not only was Brett Matthews a great sports car driver, he was also a great sports car! Following an accident in which he crashed into a science lab where a top-secret transfer ray was being developed, Brett had the ability to turn himself into a car whenever his body temperature reached a certain level. Brett trusted no one—aside from his girlfriend Pattie, his buddy Alex, and the federal government—with his chrome-plated secret.
Always an altruistic automobile, the Turbo Teen used his powers for good. Most notably, he battled bad guy Dark Rider and his truck, Bigfoot.

Isn't that thriller instrumental track kind of bizzare?

Few people know that bizarro-indie cartoonist Jim Woodring did much of the initial design work on TURBO TEEN. Worth a look, if only to see what on earth Jim was smoking back in those days...

I do indeed remember this show. In fact, I remember looking forward to watching it, even though I thought it was retarded and made no sense. What does that say about kids' brains??

What up with installing more tech under his hood and asking him to test it out, when he's there to see if they can help "cure" him?? "Yeah, sure, I'll do it!"

I also like how the car design goes back and forth, from having a back seat, to not having one.

And the "Thriller" music? Very odd. I'll be there were no worries about rights and usage back then.

Ah, the fabled Tormented Turbo Teen! Thank YOU for posting this, great illo by the way, so that it makes ME not feel like the weird one asking my pals about some cartoon where a teen turns into a car if he drinks hot liquid and turns back if cold liquid is spilled on him... were those the rules of turbo teen? well, thanks for "jumpstarting" the old memory banks on this one Sax.
Awesome as always my friend!
Keep it up.

It's funny how all you guys who commented on this Throwback, were in the same boat as me. I was cursed with the memory of this show, but couldn't find another witness. lol. Thanks for the comments and really cool facts.

Andy> That is really strange. I guess I can see it in the way Turbo teen morphs though.

Luc> I've been a fan of your work for the longest. You are right about the design changing throughout the show. I guess that doesn't say too much about the consistency of the animators on that show back
then. Looks like they recycled a lot of the scenes as well.

It's nice to see this feature return after such a long absence. Thank you!

Alas, TURBO TEEN aired during the decade I wasn't watching a lot of cartoons. I kind of bailed on Saturday morning when everyone got a nephew, a bit before everything was a thinly veiled toy commercial.

I remember this program on ABC Saturday Mornings in 1984...a rip-off of the then-popular "Knight Rider" show. Some segments in each episode were done in 3-D and special signals on the corner of the tv screen would tell kids when to put on their 3-D glasses and when to take them off while watching.

Pamela Hayden who voiced Brett's girlfriend in the show later voiced Millhouse on "The Simpsons." Frank Welker, using his "Inspector Gadget" Dr. Claw voice playyed Dark Rider the unseen bad guy in the 4x4 truck.

I LOVED Turbo Teen as a kid! My sister and I would giggle with joy when his face would spread out to form the grill and his ass, the tail end of the car. I would love to watch it again, but I'm afraid the show quality will taint the good memories. He-Man, anyone?
