PRETTY FREEKIN SCARY

I illustrated this image below of a new property at work called "PRETTY FREEKIN SCARY" It's about a dead boy named Franklin who comes back to reclaim his life as a normal kid. I didn't come up with the original designs, but my friend Carlos and I have been doing a lot of the illustration work for products and young readers books. I'll post more illustrations as they begin to go public.


Here are some photos illustrator Carlos Villagra and I took of some "Pretty Freekin Scary" merchandise we stumbled upon. I think some of this stuff is going to be availabe around October. Just in time for Halloween. Most of the merchandise here is more girl oriented and accented in pinks. There are some cool things though, like Skull change keepers and wallets. It's neat to see some of Carlos's and I work on the shelves.

THROWBACK THURSDAY 29

Captain Kangaroo was one of my favorite live action saturday morning shows. Though it's not my usual cartoon related post for Thursday, It quite definetly is a throwback to my saturday morning childhood memories. Before any of the cartoon blocks or lineups came on, this show set the pace for that morning. It's animated intro style was like a mix of Peter Max and school house rock. The captain himself wore this pimpish bright red blazer with white trim on it and he had the sickest sideburns I had ever seen. lol. I recently learned that he and Mister Rogers were buddies and both war heroes. A lot of really cool segments appeared on the show like Bill cosby's Picture pages, Mr Slim Goodbody and Simon in the land of chalk. I wish there were more shows like this airing today for the younger generation to enjoy.

I've got to track down this book.

FLIP MAGAZINE

Check out this new online Mag about Animators, written by Animators. The magazine is put together by Steve Moore (no realation) and has a cool piece about Blue Sky designer Mike Knapp.
What really struck home was in the first introduction of the magazine by Steve Moore. It was the answer to the question, " Who are animation people?" Steve describes them best....
They are kids in grown up bodies. They are actors with pencils. They are geeks. They are average, middle-class family people. They are craftsmen. They are storytellers. They are young brats and bitter old men. They are naïve, sensitive, callous and egotistic. They are loyal and easy to manipulate. They are a colorful mish-mash of personalities with a creative energy capable of moving an audience to tears (and sometimes boring them to tears). They have a common desire to make their mark, to make films and tv shows that will be loved for genreations to come.

THROWBACK THURSDAY 28

This is my Live action candidate for a hollywood movie of this classic toon. I'm sure Emmanuel Lewis was a point of reference for the design of the original Rubik character. If not, they must've been seperated at birth. LOL



Below are some warm up sketches I did last night. A couple of my friend's comic characters in hip hop poses. Real quick and loose.

THROWBACK THURSDAY 27

I really need to make time to do more posts often, especially for the Thursday Throwbacks. I'll try to do these more frequently each week. I'm just so swamped with work. Anyhow, This week I tried my hand at Peter Potamus and his pal SoSo. I had fun doing these. I wanted to make him as fat as possible without losing his character. I also wanted to play a bit with the perspective on him while still keeping kinda loose and wacky. The second pic from the top is a work in progress (perfect example of me not having enough time in the day) Thought I'd share it as is.

This was a freelance design I did for a web add last year. I illustrated these all in illustrator CS with the wacom tablet. Came out pretty good, I think I'm getting a little use to drawing with the Wacom. Anyway, I posted an illustration of a walking castle a few posts back which was rejected for this same project. Random person SKETCH

Sorry, no Throwbck today. I did, however manage to sketch out this kid I saw walking last week with his skateboard. No Lie. I thought the imagery was pretty funny and I tried to capture his motion best I could. If you could only see him moving. Anyway, I think I captured it.

THROWBACK THURSDAYS 26.5

I had to revisit the last caveman throwback for this week. I actually started this project the week of the last throwback post, but due to freelance and other duties it took longer than expected to finish up. I incorporated the bird from the last post at the end of this and recorded the ending audio with my youngest daughter Madison (Her first acting gig. lol) I recorded myself doing the bird call in quicktime pro. (yeah that's yours truly) Loads of fun. I experimented with letting flash motion tween some parts, but really didn't like how it turned out. Other parts of the animation I used my knowledge of animation timing and tricks of the trade which made the motion look WAY more fluent.

I needed a bird for the end of this flash thing I'm doing. I also need to get used to drawing with the wacom (ya know, save a tree and stuff like that) So this I did super quick in photoshop. He'll do.

THROWBACK THURSDAYS 28

"Captain CAAAAAAAVEMAAAAAAAAANNNN!!!!" Another one of my favorites as a kid. Sorry to all, I've been swamped with other artistic duties and have fallen behind on my usual Thursday bit. Hopefully this strikes a cord out there for all you cartoon finatics. Captain Caveman's powers include super-strength, a variety of useful objects hidden inside his fur, and a club that allows him to fly and from which pops out different tools he uses to fight crime (Genius). And who might you say are the lovely ladies flanking to the left and right of Mr. Cavey there? The Teen Angels of course. Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels (1977–1980) was a Saturday morning cartoon created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears and produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. It was originally broadcast on ABC as part of the programming block Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics, which also included Scooby-Doo, Dynomutt, Dog Wonder, and Laff-A-Lympics.

Last resort of a panty sniffing Pup

I was sketching dogs in my book and this fellow wondered out of my pencil. I started with this really cool shape, then I added the character to it. The hard part was turning it into an image that told some sort of story. I added an awkward arm and tried to figure out what to put in his hand. Oddly enough it ended up being a pair of tidey whiteys, his face followed through in response. I pictured him as a perverted panty sniffing puppy who'd ended up scrapping the bottom of the barrel. After searching high and low this was all he could find. The question is, will his canine urges allow him to take pleasure in sniffing a pair of DIRTY DRAWLS? (his bowtie says no, but the canine screams YES!)
